The IUS is quite like the IUD/coil, except it is impregnated with hormones. It is a small plastic device which releases the hormone progestogen into the womb. This thickens the mucus at the entrance of the womb and makes the womb an unpleasant place for a fertilised egg to attach.


  • Can stay in for up to 5 years so you don’t have to worry about contraception during that time.


  • Does not protect against STIs.
  • Can be uncomfortable to fit and the body can reject it.
